Summary

PRAIRIE HILL Learning Center is looking for an enthusiastic and intentional leader to guide our community. The Executive Director/Head of School needs to be an excellent communicator and organizer who is passionate about integrating Montessori education and the natural world for the children served on this campus. They will be a dynamic leader and partner with our talented Montessori faculty to retain the highest standards in Montessori education, and to collaborate with the entire staff, board of directors, and parents to support the programs and vision of this learning community. This is a full time, salaried, and twelve-month position with benefits.

Organization

PRAIRIE HILL is an independent non-profit Montessori school located just outside of Lincoln, Nebraska on a beautiful 12-acre farm. Founded in 1981, we are committed to environmental sustainability and are Nebraska’s first wind and solar powered school. Our campus has several acres of woods and pasture; a big red barn with horses and cats; gardens; and a small fruit orchard. We have a historic “Farmhouse”, new “Meadow House”, versatile “Prairie House”, and innovative “Earth House” for the children’s learning environments.

 

PRAIRIE HILL is a year-round learning center where we offer Montessori programs for children ages 18 months - 8th grade. The individual and small group Montessori instruction within a multi-aged community offers rich social and academic benefits to children. The children participate in planning and cooking healthful meals each day, composting, recycling, caring for the animals and earth, as well as service opportunities. We have just over 100 students on our campus. The Young Children’s Community (18 months-3 years old) and the Primary Community (3-6-years old) are all year-round programs. The Younger Elementary (6-9-years old), Older Elementary (9-12-years old) and Adolescent Community (12-14-years old) operate from mid-August until the end of May. In June, July, and part of August we have summer camps available for the community at large.  PRAIRIE HILL employs approximately 25 individuals during our school year and some seasonal summer camp staff as well. All of our lead Montessori guides are certified through AMI or AMS.

Responsibilities

  • Hold the responsibility for day-to-day operations of the school

  • Manage the organizational aspects of the school - including drafting an annual budget, overseeing facilities, ensuring regulatory and accreditation standards are met, communicating with the parents and community at large

  • Build a strong rapport with PRAIRIE HILL community members and foster warm, effective, and professional interactions

  • Be a spokesperson for the community, both at internal and external events and opportunities

  • Collaborate on fundraising efforts to ensure short-term and long-term financial health

  • Report to the Board of Directors and attend all Board meetings; provide support to and liaise with all committees

  • Serve as the liaison between all major partners of the school including the staff, parents, alumni, donors, and community members

  • Lead efforts in enrollment and retention of students for the continued strength of the community

  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of the educational programs

  • Make personnel decisions (recruitment, hiring, development, and termination) in collaboration with the appropriate colleagues

  • Oversee the payroll process

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher

  • Teaching or Administrative certificate preferred

  • Management experience in education, non-profit organizations, or leadership in other organizations like PRAIRIE HILL

  • Interest in Montessori education and/or PRAIRIE HILL. If candidate does not have Montessori training, the desire and commitment to attend training conferences (sponsored by PRAIRIE HILL) to become more familiar with Montessori philosophy and leadership

  • Prior experience with managing finances for an organization and supervising staff members. Experience relevant to prioritizing facility matters, safety considerations for children, and human relation issues

  • Experience in fundraising
