Saturday, August 23, 2008, 11 am - 3 pm Twenty-five years ago, PRAIRIE HILL Learning Center began offering a unique, nature-centered summer day camp experience for young children, staffed by two enthusiastic, professional educators and a pony named Sam. Over the years, the staff has expanded to include scientists, artists,
musicians, storytellers, craftsmen, and naturalists. Sam has retired. Honey,
Sunny, Patches and Dolly were added to meet the interest in horsemanship. Sunny
and Honey, a Palomino Shetland team pull the wagon, and Lucky, a Shetland colt
is in training. Facility improvements include a second riding arena for the Junior and Senior
Counselors to practice English riding as well as Western, renovation of the barn
for small animals, restoration of the 100-year-old horse barn, and the
establishment of a tree nursery and a bird aviary. As in the past, the daily emphasis continues to be enjoying and appreciating
the world around us - from planting seeds and discovering animal homes to solar
cooking and star gazing. Pony riding, animal care, and singing together are
everyday activities. Year-round, Prairie Hill operates as a Montessori school offering early
education for children aged 1 1/2 - 8th grade, with extended hours before and after
school. We invite you to visit, meet the staff, and enjoy the fresh country air... |
